A bill that would require anti-bullying policies in Nebraska schools has advanced out of the Education Committee, though with little chance of action this session, but the bill’s sponsor is prepared to introduce a similar bill next session.

“Realistically speaking,” said Sen. Gwen Howard of Omaha, “I couldn’t expect this will be on the floor and debated.”

Howard introduced LB 627 last year and has said it is an issue she is not going to abandon. The committee’s vote - six supporters, one opponent and one abstention - came the day after about 30 high school students from Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk and Fremont participated in a Lobby Day with Citizens for Equal Protection.

“What really turned the table was the fact those students told them compelling stories. It was hard not to listen to them,” said Michael Gordon, with Citizens for Equal Protection, a group that lobbies for gay rights.

Sen. Mike Flood of Norfolk, who is not on the Education Committee but visited with students this week, said, “Senator Howard is right on identifying this as a major issue.”

He plans to work with Howard and others to determine the most effective way to address bullying in schools.

Howard, who has worked with students and parents during her effort, said, “People need to know their Legislature really does pay attention to what’s happening with their children.”
